DC Reimagines Green Lantern in the Dark Sci-Fi Series Doomed Cosmos

DC Comics is taking Green Lantern into a darker alternate universe with Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos, a six-issue Elseworlds series written by Dan Watters and illustrated by Kyle Hotz.

Announced on October 19, 2026, the series imagines a galaxy where humanity has become a conquering force, expanding its empire across worlds. The Green Lantern Corps stands against this campaign, but the conflict takes an unexpected turn when Hal Jordan becomes the Corps’ only human member.

Hal Jordan Against Humanity

In this alternate timeline, Hal begins as a soldier fighting for the human empire. After being betrayed by his fellow soldier Oliver Queen and left for dead on an alien planet, he is rescued by the Green Lantern Corps.

Following his recovery, Hal turns against the empire he once served. His knowledge of humanity’s military machine makes him an important asset in a war that threatens the wider universe.

The premise reverses the familiar Green Lantern setup. Instead of defending Earth from outside threats, Hal must confront the consequences of humanity’s own expansion.

A War-Torn Elseworlds Universe

Dan Watters writes the series, while Kyle Hotz handles the artwork and main cover. The creative team is aiming for a science-fiction war story in which the Lanterns are battered, outnumbered and forced to keep fighting despite dwindling resources.

The six-issue format gives DC room to explore an alternate cosmic setting without changing the continuity of its main Green Lantern stories.

Green Lantern: Doomed Cosmos #1 is scheduled to arrive at comic book shops and digital retailers on January 20, 2027. The first issue is 32 pages and has a listed US cover price of $4.99.
