Daniel Warren Johnson’s Chainkata #1 Draws 116 Retailer-Exclusive Covers

Image Comics’ upcoming science-fiction series Chainkata is attracting significant retailer interest before its debut, with 116 retailer-exclusive covers announced for its first issue.

The new series comes from writer and artist Daniel Warren Johnson, known for Do a Powerbomb, Extremity and his work on Transformers. Image Comics announced the retailer-cover programme on October 16, 2026.

A Chainsaw-Wielding Warrior in Space

Chainkata follows Luma, a warrior queen who travels through space in search of an unknown power. Although she wants peace, violence follows her across the galaxy.

The concept combines large-scale science-fiction adventure with the character-focused storytelling that has become a hallmark of Johnson’s work. The publisher describes the series as a major new project from the creator, following several acclaimed comic-book runs.

Why 116 Exclusive Covers Matter

The number of retailer-exclusive editions highlights how comic shops and collectors can shape the launch of a new series. Exclusive covers give participating retailers artwork that is not available on the standard edition, while artists gain additional visibility through the same release.

The announcement includes covers by a wide range of artists, with participating shops commissioning different designs. These editions are aimed in part at collectors who value distinctive cover artwork.

However, the number of variants does not by itself establish how many copies the comic will sell. Actual readership and demand will become clearer after release.

Release Date

Chainkata #1 is scheduled to arrive at comic book shops on November 18, 2026. The issue will also be available through digital comic and ebook platforms.

With a high-profile creator and a large retailer-exclusive programme, the launch will be worth watching as an example of how the direct comic-shop market supports a new creator-owned series.
