Marvel Comics is putting renewed emphasis on horror-inspired superhero storytelling with its Midnight line, which came into focus around New York Comic Con 2026.
In a report published on October 22, 2026, Publishers Weekly examined the initiative as part of a wider period of change at Marvel, including editorial leadership changes and a renewed focus on the publisher’s creative direction.
The Midnight line brings familiar superhero characters into stories shaped by horror, giving creators opportunities to explore darker themes and different kinds of conflict within the Marvel Universe.

Familiar Heroes, Darker Stories
Horror has long been part of superhero comics, from supernatural threats and monsters to psychological suspense. Marvel’s Midnight line places this approach in the spotlight, allowing creators to experiment with tone while working with established characters and settings.
Writers Jonathan Hickman, Benjamin Percy and Philip Kennedy Johnson discussed their enthusiasm for the initiative in the Publishers Weekly report.
The approach could appeal to readers who enjoy superhero universes but are also interested in darker storytelling, supernatural danger and horror-driven narratives.

A Wider Period of Change at Marvel
The initiative arrives as Marvel reviews its publishing priorities under editor-in-chief Stephen Wacker. According to Publishers Weekly, Wacker has emphasised quality control and publishing books the company believes in rather than simply increasing the volume of releases.
The Midnight line offers an example of how a major comics publisher can use a genre-focused initiative to give its catalogue a distinct creative direction.
Whether the line builds a lasting audience will depend on the stories, their execution and readers’ response to this darker approach.
